Anheuser-Busch laptop theft affects 140,000 people

More than 140,000 people nationwide have been affected by the June theft of laptops with personal information about current and former Anheuser-Busch employees.

The laptops contained personal information on nearly 87,500 people, including current and former employees, and more than 3,000 people involved in employee assistance programs, according to a letter the brewer sent to the Florida Attorney General's Office.

Another 51,000 were affected in California, said a spokesman for the California AG's office.

Residents in five states were affected, including Missouri, Florida, Virginia, New Hampshire and Texas.

The missing data included Social Security numbers, addresses and dates of birth, but the information was encrypted and password-protected, Anheuser-Busch said.

The robbery occurred sometime between June 6 and June 9 at an Anheuser-Busch office in Sunset Hills, the letter said.

"We have taken this incident very seriously by implementing additional quality controls to avoid similar incidents in the future," Anheuser-Busch wrote to Florida's AG.

St. Louis-based Anheuser-Busch Cos. Inc. (NYSE: BUD), through its Anheuser-Busch Inc. subsidiary, is the leading domestic brewer, holding a 48.5 percent share of U.S. beer sales. The company, which accepted a $52 billion takeover offer from Belgian InBev, brews the world's largest-selling beers, Budweiser and Bud Light. Anheuser-Busch also owns a 50 percent share in Grupo Modelo, Mexico's leading brewer, and a 27 percent share in China brewer Tsingtao, whose namesake beer brand is the country's best-selling premium beer.

Its Fairfield brewery has a capacity of 4.4 million barrels per year.It produces Budweiser, Bud Light, Busch, Busch Light and Natural Light, and serves Northern California, Alaska, Northern Nevada, Oregon, Washington and Hawaii.
