Asahi Breweries to form sales joint venture in Taiwan
Japan's Asahi Breweries Ltd. (TSE:2502) on Thursday announced plans to set up a 50-50 joint venture with a Taiwanese trading house this month in order to market Asahi brand liquors, soft drinks and foods. The brewer is shooting for about 5 billion yen (US$47.6 million) in Taiwanese sales of Asahi brand products in 2013, a 6.5-fold increase from 2007.
Asahi and Mercuries and Associates Ltd. will each invest NT$120 million (US$3.73 million) to create Asahi & Mercuries Co. The company intends to increase exports of tea beverages, carbonated soft drinks and health food products as well.
The joint venture will also handle other firms' products, but about 70 per cent of its income will likely come from Asahi brand products.
