Euromalt: The 2007 European malting barley crop
23.11.07 - Last year Euromalt, representing the E.U. Malting Industry, published a memorandum explaining the problems that were confronting our industry due to the exceptionally poor E.U. malting barley crop. We all thought that it was a situation that we would not see again for many years to come. We were very wrong. Today the 2007 crop is turning out to be far more complicated than the 2006 crop. This year we are having to deal with a very poor European malting barley crop and at the same time, cope with a world grain market that is dramatically volatile and extremely dangerous due to the fact that there are barely enough supplies of grain to meet demand on a worldwide basis. The consequences on our supply chain will probably be far more reaching than last year’s ‘accident’.

The decision to issue this memorandum was taken during an extraordinary Euromalt Malting Barley Committee that was held on the 8th of November in Brussels. Much has already been written and much will be written about the consequences of what happened during the month of August this year. In this brief memorandum we will try to explain what happened to our raw material, malting barley, and what will be the consequences for our industry.

No, alcohol ain’t necessarily good for breast-feeding!
25.05.05 - Folk wisdom has it that a beer or two before giving suck helps lactation. But recent American research suggests that this just “ain’t necessarily so”. Women in fact produce less milk after a few beers, and they need more time to produce the more or less that they do. So, is beer counterproductive as regards milk?
